From its humble beginning 72 years ago, with a solitary bear, San Francisco Zoo has come a long way. Today it is North California's largest zoological park and conservation center. Cool breeze from the adjoining Pacific Ocean provides a comfortable climate throughout the year. The zoo is being converted into a conservation zoo which is dedicated to the preservation of wildlife.
The zoo boasts of a staggering 5000 animals and 250 species all housed in habitats replicating their natural environment. The zoo includes striking penguins, majestic lions, quaint koalas, cool polar bears, stunning giraffes, and huge elephants. The zoo also offers one of the country's largest gorilla habitats and features a lemur forest, kangaroo exhibit, and Latin American area where people can watch anteaters, storks, tapirs, and other native creatures. You can watch wild life at close quarters in their untamed glory in the new Africa savanna which features giraffe, zebra, kudu, ostrich and other African wildlife roaming together in a lush, 3- acre habitat.
Another attraction which draws tourists is the Lemur Forest which houses five different species. Watch them in their natural state frolicking, eating or simply sleeping.
