Palace of Fine Arts Theatre is a magnificent edifice that harks back to an earlier era. It is operated by the Palace of Fine Arts League, Inc., a non- profit corporation. It has hosted various shows including ‘The Late Show' with David Letterman, Phil Donohue Show, Jay Leno, Joan Baez, Tori Amos, Robin Williams, Dave Koz, San Francisco Ballet, David Byrne, and Brian Eno.
It was one of the last paramount buildings of the Panama Pacific Exposition of 1915. Construction began in December 8, 1913. Columns were framed in wood and later enveloped in plaster and burlap- type fiber. It was the largest building ever to be made of that material. The building got a new lease of life when in the late 1950's, a group of dedicated citizens, led by philanthropist Walter S. Johnson, initiated a drive to rescue the Palace from planned demolition and restore it to its former glory. Reconstruction started and in September, 1967 the work on the building was completed.
Even today the palace is a ‘Thing of beauty' swan from a nearby lagoon, glide by serenely. Its grand dome is ornately decorated. There are figures of warriors clashing with each other over beautiful maidens. It is also a favored picnic spot.
The gallery area now houses the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre and the Exploratorium. The theatre, which seats 1,000 in a continental- style configuration, was added in 1970.
