Mission Dolores is steeped in history. It is the oldest building in San Francisco, built way back in 1788, at the time of American independence. The Mission was founded by Father Junipero Serra.
The building takes you back to a different era. It reminds you of Spanish colonial San Francisco. The roof beams of the structure are bound together with raw hide strips.
The Mission houses a small museum containing religious artifacts and historical stories from the Mission District. The museum has remained culturally significant, acting as the center of a vibrant, diverse parish- - a truly stabilizing influence in the neighborhood. Today, besides drawing hundreds of thousands of San Francisco visitors, Mission Dolores is an important part of the community, the center of a vibrant, diverse parish which renders help to all in need.
The graveyard behind the museum includes the remains of both noble colonial families and native American. Colorful characters like Belu and Charles Cora, the Gold Rush era's most notorious madam and gambler, finally married just prior to Charles' death are buried here.
The charming garden captivates you with its beauty. The garden houses shrubs, flowers, and plants of the 1791 period. A rose garden gifted by Golden Gate Society provides heady fragrance.
