The story of Macy's is like a dream come true. Making a humble beginning in the form of a small, fancy dry good store that opened at 6th Avenue in New York city way back in 1858, it has emerged as one of the largest department store retailers in the United States.
In the beginning Rowland Hussey Macy experienced failure at every step. After several unsuccessful ventures he finally tasted success with the launch of R.H. Macy and Co. By 1877, R.H. Macy & Co. had become a full- fledged department store occupying the ground space of eleven adjacent buildings.
Macy made many daring moves to revolutionize the retail industry. He was the first retailer to place a woman Margaret Getchell to an executive position. He pioneered such revolutionary business practices as the one- price system, in which the same item was sold to every customer at one price, and quoting specific prices for goods in newspaper advertising. Known for its innovative merchandising, Macy's was the first to introduce such products as the tea bag, the Idaho baked potato and colored bath towels.
Macy offers a good selection of fashion and luxury items which are easy on the wallet. As of November 2003, there are 248 Macy's stores in twenty- one states, Puerto Rico and Guam. Playing the good Samaritan, Macy has also sponsored innumerable charity events.
