Book lovers of San Francisco should head for City Lights Books and browse until your heart's content. It came into being in 1953 founded by poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Peter D. Martin.
Over the years it has continued to grow, but it takes pride in being the nation's first all paperback bookstore. The book store has three floors consisting of both new- release hardcover and quality paperbacks from all the major publishing houses, along with an impressive range of titles from specialty publishers. The store features an extensive and in- depth selection of poetry, fiction, translations, politics, history, philosophy, music, spirituality, and more.
It not only sells books but publishes them as well. It has carved a niche for itself for its dedication to liberal, novel and creative ideas. It has also put up a stiff resistance to censorship and conservatism. In this virtual treasure house of books, you can get books of far flung budding poets as well as works of local favorites like Jack Spicer and Mei- Mei Brussenbrugge.
The non- profit wing of this book store City Light Foundation cultivates and spreads literacy which goes a long way in solving problems, building communities and sustaining cultural heritage. You can be entertained by hearing authors read every month, free of cost.
Hours of operation: Daily 10 am- midnight
