Ponzu brings flavors of the exotic fabled east to San Francisco. Located in theater district downtown near Union Square, this lively place succeeds in attracting both a bar and a dining crowd, looking for a blend of food and fun. The moment you step inside, you experience an altogether different world. The place is really a happening one with chairs, couches and high tables arranged tastefully. Soothing music in the background adds to its charm.
Ponzu describes itself as an Asian tapas restaurant. "It's Asia without a map," they say. 'Chinese, Japanese, Thai and Vietnamese ingredients blend with contemporary presentations to create dishes that are perfect to share.' The menu at ponzu is scintillating. A look at the delicious food not only enriches your palate but is a feast for your eyes too. The "classic ponzu, chile- salt fried calamari" with a roasted garlic- chile dipping sauce, golden curry beef short ribs piled upon knots of Chinese broccoli swimming in a golden broth, tamarind glazed duck breast with bok choy, endive, and pea sprouts are some of the hot favorites.
Ponzu is moderately expensive at dinner, with small plates ranging from - 12, and bigger plates from - (for the Thai seafood stew that contains lobster.
Hours of Operation: Sunday - Thursday: 5:00pm - 10:00pm; Friday and Saturday: 5:00pm - 11:00pm. Lounge is open until 11:00pm; Sunday - Thursday and until midnight Friday and Saturday.
