In 1971, a group of women founded San Francisco Women's Centers (SFWC) to organize the Bay Area's women projects.

Their work consisted of publishing news letters, staffing a community switchboard, and organizing activist groups. This led to the Woman's building in 1979, which is a woman owned and operated community center.

Celebration of Craftswoman is one of San Francisco's biggest retail festival. Myraids of woman artists, sell an array of traditional handcrafted items made from materials like glass, wood, metals, clay, leather, silk and more. Home furniture and accessories, exquisite art sculpture, stunning photography and other artwork are on display.

It is the country's largest juried art fair. Over 50,000 people attend the festival. The earnings of this festival benefit the Women's Building. The Women's Building provides affordable meeting and event space supporting cultural events, educational forums, advocacy meetings, and support groups.
