The Empire Plush Room opened stealthily during the late 1920s, when San Francisco was under the grip of prohibition which made life dull. In order to bring back color and gaiety, the Empire Plush Room opened illegally. San Francisco socialites, world famous singers and gangsters flocked to enjoy illegal spirits and to hear the top entertainers of the era perform.

Tucked away in a secret hideout revelers who wanted to make merry had to find their way through a maze of amazing underground passageways to reach this exotic destination.

Once the era of prohibition came to an end and there was no need for a shroud of secrecy, the Empire Plush Room flaunted its full glory to the public. It became one of the most popular music venues in the city. This entertainment center had a brush with fame, when Alfred Hitchcock chose it as a major location in his classic thriller "Vertigo".

It features titillating cabaret by hosting stars like Rita Moreno, Mary Wilson, Kitty Carlise Hart, Bruce Vilanch, and San Francisco's own Paula West who keep the tradition of cabaret alive with their erotic movements.
