Bimbo's is the product of America's great depression, a period when pockets were empty, nerves ran high and people felt blue. In 1931, Agostino Giuntoli nicknamed ‘Bimbo' and Monk Young decided to open a club to bring about a whiff of gaiety to their otherwise depressed lives.
Celebrities and stars flocked to the newly opened Bimbo's club. It became a byword for fun. Gin was served in coffee cups while chorus girls swung to music. Men ogled at the optical illusion of Dolfina, The Girl in the Fishbowl: She appeared to swim nude in a fish tank behind the bar. Since then Bimbo's has never looked back. It hosts private parties, special events and concerts. Its musical show featuring Chris Isaak and Jewel to the Brian Setzer Orchestra and Macy Gray is a big draw.
This depression- era hot spot has become an institution. Today, many old timers grow misty eyed as they sit in the club and recall old times. The classic ballroom seems to take you back in time with soft- red curtains, glittering chandeliers and smartly dressed waiters clad in tuxedo. Music buffs will be enthralled by top performers in jazz, rock and hip- hop.
Once a month, Bimbo's hosts an over 18 show. At these performances, delicacies like turkey sandwiches, focaccia pizza, french fries and hot dogs are sold.
