Alexander Allende and Todd Brown shared a dream. They wanted to share the joy of creating art with people of all walks of life. In February 2003, they signed a lease on a vast empty room that housed one closet and a bathroom, along with two layers of very old linoleum flooring. It was in this dingy place that Todd and Alex co- founded an interdisciplinary artist space named "Porfilio Is - Mission Art House". They had a couple of credit cards and basic carpentry skills and started working.

The only financial source for running this museum was the sale of their artwork and money raised from Argentine Tango classes. So in order to increase the chances of its survival, Todd and Alex began teaching on a weekly basis.

Painting classes started soon. By the end of the year, Todd was engaged with other local artists in making the first Mission Arts & Performance Project (MAPP) event. He believed that the creative surge that an artist experiences is worth more than the end creative product. Each participant is given a large canvas to pour out his creative zeal.
