Take a trip down memory lane and show your children and grandchildren what you played with when you were of their age. These were the times when television and videogames had not made inroads into our lives. The museum takes you on a nostalgic journey from the turn of the century hand cranked music boxes to modern video arcade games. It is one of the world's largest privately owned collections of mechanically operated musical instruments and antique arcade machines.
For those of you who have spent their formative years in the San Francisco Bay Area, it is an opportunity to recall Playland at the Beach, Sutro Baths and the Cliff House. There is “Laffing Sal”, “Susie the Can- Can Dancer” and the fascinating “Carnival.” Other things have been brought in from around the world to please you. For years the collection was kept in the lower level of the Cliff House. Owing to renovation in 2002 the collection was transferred to its new location at Pier 45 at Fisherman's Wharf.
Its collection consists of over 300 items, like orchestrions, coin operated pianos, antique slot machines, and animations, down to small bird boxes. The museum excels in music collections and takes you back to all those good- old times you have always cherished.
A vintage 1912 motorcycle made by a man called Gillingwater is one of the prime attractions. What's more, despite its age it works!
