The museum bears the stamp of its creator M. H. de Young, after whom it is named. Slowly but steadily he built up a formidable collection of artifacts and works of art from all around the globe. His impeccable taste, is reflected in the huge collection of artifacts displayed in the museum, many of which he had so painstakingly collected.
His taste for the exotic and ornate can be discerned to by his collections of painting and sculpture, arms and armor, fine porcelain, objects from South Pacific and American Indian cultures, including original art objects as well as replicas.
